Rich Knobloch "Pibb Sure" Fund

Rich Knobloch: classmate, teacher, co-worker, friend and Mr. Pibb connoisseur.

We have a special opportunity for you to be part of a new legacy: a scholarship in memory of Richard Knobloch, who passed away in March 2018. Rich’s family has established the Rich Knobloch “Pibb Sure” Fund to provide an annual scholarship to an incoming junior or senior student who has shown dedication and commitment in the areas of math or computer science.

This permanent endowment will pay tribute to Rich, who dedicated his 40-year teaching career to the ministry of Catholic education at Lourdes Academy. Not only was the school a large part of his life, as an alumnus, a math teacher, and cross-country, baseball, and softball coach, but it was also a large part of his family’s life, since his wife Susan (Basel-‘70), daughter Sara (’96), and son Steve (’00) all graduated from Lourdes.

The fund’s name honors Mr. K’s longtime tradition of asking his students if they were “Pibb sure” of their answers to math problems, jokingly betting his favorite soft drink Mr. Pibb. In the words of Rich’s former students:

    • “He was a great educator and terrific role model.” John Noone, ‘83
    • “He truly loved to teach, help students, and do whatever he could to make Lourdes special.” John Cleaver, ’99
    • “Coach K. was a great man, mentor, and teacher—he made everyone he ever taught a better person.” Steve Gabavics, ’90
    • “Mr. Knobloch was an outstanding teacher. I remember his love of math and making it fun. I do not actually remember any great mystery of math that he taught me. I just really remember his smile, his laugh, and wanting to go to his class. Isn’t that what makes a great teacher? Getting kids to learn, and love to learn, without them even realizing they’re doing it. It was Mr. K’s enthusiasm about math that guided me to a career in software development. And a love for Mr. Pibb.” Heidi (Egbert) Sweet, ’89

The family’s goal is to fully fund this scholarship with an endowment, and we are already more than halfway to that goal! Will you help promote academics, offset tuition AND recognize a fellow classmate and former teacher with a gift to the Rich Knobloch “Pibb Sure” Fund? Gifts to the fund can be returned in the enclosed envelope or made online HERE
